Wet food for cats is much more than a simple treat: it is a nutritional option with multiple benefits for your feline's health. Is it really healthy? Can it help prevent diseases? In this article we explain everything you need to know.

What is wet food for cats?

Wet food for cats is characterised by containing more than 60% moisture. It comes in different formats —tins, pouches and trays— and in a wide variety of textures: pâtés, chunks in sauce or in jelly. Its high water content makes it a particularly beneficial option for renal and urinary health, unlike dry food, whose moisture content is below 12%.

Main benefits of wet food for cats

Better hydration and kidney health

Cats are animals of desert origin with a low instinct to drink water on their own. Wet food compensates for this by providing fluids directly through the diet. Adequate hydration is essential to prevent urinary tract diseases, kidney stone formation and chronic kidney failure, one of the most frequent conditions in adult and senior cats.

Greater palatability

The juicy texture and intense aroma of wet food make it particularly attractive to cats. This is very useful for animals with poor appetite, recovering from illness, or simply for demanding felines in whom it is difficult to find a food they are enthusiastic about.

Complete and balanced nutrition

Quality wet food formulas provide high biological value animal proteins, essential fatty acids (Omega-3 and Omega-6), vitamins, minerals and taurine, an essential amino acid for cats that contributes to heart and visual health. A diet balanced in these nutrients is the best investment in the long-term health of your feline.

Weight control and satiety

Thanks to its high water content, wet food produces a greater feeling of fullness with fewer calories. This makes it a good ally for cats with a tendency to be overweight or for those that live indoors and have a more reduced activity level.

When is wet food particularly recommended?

Although all cats can benefit from wet food, it is especially indicated in the following cases:

  • Growing kittens: they need nutrient-dense and easily digestible food for the correct development of bones, muscles and immune system.
  • Senior cats: with lower chewing capacity and higher risk of kidney problems, they particularly benefit from the extra hydration.
  • Cats with urinary or kidney conditions: the additional hydration is essential in their nutritional management.
  • Cats with poor appetite: the high palatability helps to stimulate food consumption.

Wet or dry food: can they be combined?

It is not necessary to choose between one option or the other. Combining wet food with dry food allows you to take advantage of the benefits of both: the hydration and palatability of the former, along with the practicality and dental benefit that the latter provides. As a general rule, wet food can represent between 50% and 70% of the daily diet. Always consult your vet for the most appropriate proportion for your cat's specific needs.

Remember that good nutrition is the foundation of your feline's health. Choosing quality products, adapted to their age and lifestyle, will make a real difference in their wellbeing and life expectancy.
